We collect raw propolis from our Valparaiso bee hives to make a 30% solution tincture. Using 190 proof alcohol, we let the solution sit for 2 months, shaking daily. The tincture is then filtered and bottled.
While raw propolis is often called "bee glue" because bees use it to seal cracks and sterilize their hive, the tincture form is what allows humans to use it medicinally. The alcohol extracts the active compounds—primarily flavonoids and phenolic acids—making them easier for the body to absorb.
Key Health Benefits
Research suggests propolis has powerful protective properties, often described as "nature's antibiotic."
1. Immune Support (Antimicrobial)
Antibacterial & Antiviral: It is widely used to boost the immune system and fight off infections like the common cold and flu.
Sore Throats: One of its most common uses is as a throat spray or gargle to soothe soreness and kill bacteria in the throat.
2. Oral Health
Gum Health: Propolis can help reduce plaque, gingivitis, and inflammation in the gums.
Mouth Sores: It is often effective at speeding up the healing of canker sores and oral mucositis (sores from medical treatments).
3. Wound Healing & Skin Care
Minor Wounds: Applied topically, it creates a protective barrier and prevents infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
Cold Sores (Herpes): Topical application may help cold sores heal faster and reduce pain.
Acne: Its antibacterial properties can help reduce acne bacteria on the skin.
4. Anti-Inflammatory & Antioxidant
It is rich in antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the body and reduce inflammation, which is the root of many chronic issues.
How It Is Used
Because tinctures are concentrated, they are used in small amounts.
Internal: Common dosages range from 5–20 drops mixed into water, juice, or a spoonful of honey (to mask the strong, resinous taste).
External: Applied directly to the skin using a dropper or cotton swab (e.g., on a cut or cold sore).
Oral: Mixed with water to use as a mouthwash or applied directly to a canker sore.
